Welcome to Mal's corner of The Heart of a Hero. This section will house all my Mal fic's, fan art of Jack (mine and other people's), and links to my favorite Firefly and serenity sites (most of which are Mal centered of course!). Eventually, I'll put up a biography as well. Maybe. Don't hold your breath on that one.
So . . . Why Mal? After all, he isn't your typical hero and is darker than my other hero's. Even Jack in a way.
Because, despite his "I'm a cold hearted bastard" attitude, deep down, he truly cares about people. The fact that he allows River and Simon to stay on Serenity is proof of that. Sure, it's a plus that Simon is a doctor and they can sorely use one, but I don't think that's the main reason he did it. I believe he did it because of River. Despite the obvious danger she presents to the rest of the crew. It becomes clear as the show progresses that he cares about her very much. He even makes mention to that fact in the movie.
The way he is with Kaylee is also proof of that. He often snaps at the other members of the crew (granted, some more so than others), but he very rarely raises his voice to Kaylee. Sure, he gets on her butt when he thinks she's slacking off, but he doesn't get really short with her. On the rare occasion that he does get short with her, he obviously feels like crap about it immediately afterwards. Just look at his reaction after he hurts Kaylee's feelings in Shindig.
Here's a guy who had his faith in God stripped from him in a very cruel way when the Independents lost the Unification War. In a way, that's probably worse than if he had stopped believing in God's very existence. Why? Because Mal very much believes that God does exist, he simply believes that God has turned his back on him and his people. It's pretty clear that Mal was quite devout in his belief in God and that, with God on their side; the Independants would surely win the war. I think he feels a very deep sense of betrayal in that regard. Especially with what happened at Serenity Valley after the Independents surrendered. And who can blame him? After all, being left on a war torn planet for two weeks with little food or water and surrounded by dead and dying friends and comrades would make any one pretty damn angry!
Mal is fiercly loyal to, and protective of, the members of his crew. Even the ones he doesn't much like. They are not just his friends or "employees", they are his family. He would do anything to protect them.
Yes, he flouts, and even breaks, the law, but does have limits on what he will and won't do. He's kinda like a modern day Robin Hood. Except, of coruse, that he keeps the money he's paid for what he steals! But he only steals from them as can afford it. Or those already dead.
Besides, he lives in a spaceship. How freaking cool is that!
In the words of Kaylee . . . I love my captain!
DISCLAIMER: Firefly and its characters belong to Joss Whedon, Fox, and whoever else has a claim to ‘em. I, sadly, am not one of them.
Archive: Ask first. I'll probably say yes.
